At-Home Manicure Checklist
A simple at-home manicure routine: soak, shape, care for cuticles, moisturize, and finish — gentle steps for healthier-looking nails.

The 5 steps
- Remove and soak. Take off old polish, then soak fingertips in warm water for 2–3 minutes. Softened nails file cleanly and cuticles stay calm.
- Shape, one direction. File in one direction with a fine-grit file — sawing back and forth weakens the nail edge. Match your natural nail curve.
- Push cuticles back, gently. A damp washcloth or wooden stick is enough — never cut living cuticles. This step is care, not surgery.
- Moisturize everything. Hand cream plus a drop of oil on each cuticle. Weekly moisture is what keeps nails flexible instead of brittle.
- Base coat, then color. One base coat protects the nail; two thin color coats beat one thick one. Skip polish some weeks — bare nails breathe fine.
How often
Once a week for shaping and cuticles; polish only when you feel like it. The care steps matter more than the color — healthy bare nails beat chipped polish.
Two mistakes that undo the routine
- Cutting cuticles — it opens the door to infection and ragged regrowth. Push back gently, moisturize daily.
- Peeling off gel or polish — it lifts nail layers with it. Soak off patiently, even when you are in a hurry.
